Buying a used car in Liège: what you need to know

Liège has close to 200,000 inhabitants, with around 750,000 people in the wider metropolitan area. The Meuse flows through the city and the Ourthe joins it here, while neighbourhoods climb steeply up the hillsides, from Cointe to the Citadel. Between the riverside quays, the steep streets on the heights and the surrounding suburbs, one car can face very different conditions in a single day.

For mostly urban use, a compact car that is easy to park and comfortable on climbs is often the best choice. If you commute to Brussels, Namur, Verviers or across the border, prioritise comfort, sensible motorway consumption and reliable driver assistance. Clutch, brakes and gearbox work harder on Liège's slopes, so check them with extra care.

E25, E40, E42 and E313: Liège as a motorway hub

Liège sits at the junction of four European routes: the E25 to Maastricht in the north and the Ardennes and Luxembourg in the south, the E40 to Brussels and Aachen, the E42 to Namur and Verviers, and the E313 to Hasselt and Antwerp. For many residents, the motorway is part of the daily commute, with heavy traffic around the city at rush hour.

The river port on the Meuse, one of the largest in Europe, and Liège Airport at Bierset, which mainly handles freight, also bring a lot of lorries onto local roads. Good visibility, intact mirrors and sensors and working assistance systems are real assets when driving around Liège.

Low emission zone in Liège: where things stand

Wallonia once planned a low emission zone covering the whole region. In April 2024, the Walloon Parliament voted to repeal that region-wide LEZ. Regional studies named Liège among the large cities where an LEZ would be most relevant, and Wallonia now favours targeted local measures. As far as we know, no LEZ applies in Liège today, but check the city's website before buying an older car you plan to keep for years.

If you work in Brussels or Antwerp, remember that those cities do run their own low emission zones. Check on the official websites whether the car is allowed before you sign. This matters most for older diesels: a car that drives freely in Liège may be refused in Brussels or Antwerp, or only allowed in against payment.

The Liège tram and Guillemins station: handy for buyers and sellers

Since 28 April 2025, the Liège tram has run between Sclessin and Coronmeuse on an 11.7 km line along the Meuse that also serves Guillemins station. There are park-and-ride facilities at the Standard stop in Sclessin and at Liège Expo in Bressoux. For many households in the centre, the tram makes a second car less necessary.

For a buyer coming from Brussels, Flanders or abroad, Liège-Guillemins is a convenient arrival point, also served by international trains. You can arrive by train, view the car at the seller's and drive it straight home. Just make sure insurance and registration are arranged first.

Vehicle inspection in Liège: centres and Walloon rules

Autosécurité runs, among others, the Liège inspection centre on Avenue de l'Indépendance in Wandre and the Grâce-Hollogne centre on Rue de l'Expansion in the industrial zone. Appointments are booked online on the operator's website. There are further stations across the province, including Wanze, Hannut and Verviers.

In Wallonia, a passenger car must be inspected every year from the age of four. A bonus can extend the certificate to two years if the car is no more than eight years old, has no more than 110,000 km, has always been inspected on time and does not tow a trailer over 750 kg. When a car is sold, a used-vehicle inspection is required before registration to the new owner, and the registration application issued is valid for two months.

Flanders relaxed its rules in 2026 and will scrap the sale inspection on 1 January 2027 for cars sold within Belgium, but this does not apply in Wallonia. Because Liège is close to the Netherlands and Germany, many buyers also look across the border. An imported car must always pass inspection before it can be registered in Belgium.

  • Autosécurité centres in Wandre (Liège) and Grâce-Hollogne
  • Annual inspection in Wallonia from age four, possible two-year bonus
  • Used-vehicle inspection before registration to the buyer
  • Imported car: inspection mandatory before registration

Regional car taxes for Liège residents

Registration tax and the annual road tax are regional. If you live in Liège, the Walloon Region is responsible and SPW Fiscalité collects them. The region is decided by your home address on the day the car is registered with the DIV. Registration tax is due at every registration, including for a used car.

The Walloon Parliament adopted a reform of vehicle taxation on 28 May 2025, with new registration tax scales from 1 July 2025. Check the tables on finances.wallonie.be before buying so you know the real cost of the car before agreeing a price.

Meeting sellers safely and test driving in Liège

Meet in daylight, in a busy place or at the seller's home. Bring someone along, inspect the car in dry weather and ask for the registration certificate, certificate of conformity, latest inspection certificate, a Car-Pass no more than two months old and the service invoices. Check that the chassis number matches the documents.

Liège's hills make an excellent test bench. A steep street on the heights lets you test a hill start, the clutch and the handbrake. A short stretch of the E25 or E40 shows how stable and quiet the car is at speed. Avoid very busy days such as 15 August, when the Outremeuse folk festival draws huge crowds.

Never pay large sums in cash and refuse to pay a deposit for a car you have not seen. A bank transfer leaves a trail and protects both parties. Draw up a dated sale agreement with the time, mileage, chassis number and details of buyer and seller.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a low emission zone in Liège?

The region-wide Walloon LEZ was repealed by the Walloon Parliament in April 2024. As far as we know, no low emission zone currently applies in Liège. Wallonia now favours local measures, and Liège was named as a city where an LEZ could be relevant, so follow developments on the city's website.

Where can I get my car inspected in Liège?

Autosécurité has, among others, a centre in Wandre on Avenue de l'Indépendance and one in Grâce-Hollogne on Rue de l'Expansion. Other stations in the province include Wanze, Hannut and Verviers. Appointments are made online, so book in good time if you are preparing a sale.

Is the sale inspection disappearing in Liège in 2027 too?

No. Scrapping the sale inspection on 1 January 2027 applies in Flanders. In Wallonia, an inspection is still needed before a car is registered to its new owner, and periodic inspection remains annual, with a possible two-year bonus under conditions. Check the rules in force at the time of sale.

What should I watch out for when buying a car in the Netherlands or Germany from Liège?

With Maastricht and Aachen so close, it is tempting. But an imported car must pass inspection before it can be registered in Belgium, and you will pay Walloon registration tax. Check the car's history, the paperwork and that no debts or liens are attached before you pay.

Which taxes do I pay in Liège for a used car?

You pay Walloon registration tax when the car is registered, then the annual road tax, both collected by SPW Fiscalité. Your home address in the Walloon Region decides which region applies. Walloon vehicle taxation was reformed in 2025, so check finances.wallonie.be before you buy.

Where can I do a good test drive in Liège?

Combine a steep street on the heights to test a hill start and the clutch, urban traffic on the quays and a short stretch of the E25 or E40 to judge the car at speed. Drive in daylight, ask for a cold start and avoid busy days such as 15 August in Outremeuse.

Can I come to Liège by train to view a car?

Yes. Liège-Guillemins station is well connected, including by international trains, and the tram links it to the Sclessin to Coronmeuse line. You can arrive by train, meet the seller and drive home, provided insurance and registration are sorted before you set off.

Is my name shown if I sell my car in Liège on CarCentrale?

No. Private sellers' names are not shown publicly. Buyers from Liège and beyond contact you through the site, so you decide who comes to view the car. Listing is free and the AI assistant fills in your listing from your photos and text in about three clicks.
